The Soul Suckers
by Karen A. Romanko
The soul suckers don't arrive
by night as you would think
They come by day
when the sun is shining
and the grass is green
and the homes are empty
except for the one house
on the cul-de-sac
where someone is alone
They suck out her soul
to slake their thirst
each one drinking three drops
The soul suckers leave the woman
looking much as she did
but for her empty eyes
and return to wherever
soul suckers reside
until the next sunny day
